EDUCATIONAL
GARDEN As
the issue of water control continues to become so prominent in the
future of our county and state, our intention is to create an outdoor
educational garden to show homeowners, homeowners associations, civic
organizations and developers the benefits of landscaping with drought
tolerant and native plants. This will alleviate the use of excessive
watering, fertilizers and gas-powered machinery. A dry creek bed was installed in the garden in 2003 when an ephemeral water problem developed after heavy rains, causing water to run under the staff housing. With donations of rocks, plants and volunteer labor, the creek bed and accompanying footbridge add a more natural effect to the garden while alleviating the problem. We are currently in the process of removing the grass between the wildflower meadow and the house, adding native plants and herbs, with plenty of mulch to keep the grass out. This helps cut down on mowing, fertilizers, pesticides and watering (once the plants are established). Cedar
